Character Information Character Name: Raol Leveren Nickname(s): Vizekorporal Raol Leveren, Raol Garvo (birthname) Gender: Male Age and Bithday: Libra 27th (29) Guild: Fighter's Guild Job Class: Squire (13) -> Knight (18) -> Holy Knight (24) Weapon: Sword, adept with a Halberd as well
Personality: Raol is a quiet, introverted sort, mostly due to a lifelong feeling of being isolated and 'othered' by his harsh upbringing in an unfamiliar country. He is loyal and respectful, though he has quite the sarcastic and sardonic wit -- he just keeps it under his breath, muttered to a friend rather than a church leader.
His romantic life is complicated, given his status as a gay man. He was raised in a rather dogmatic Pharist household. Despite the fact that the church is technically okay with homosexuality, his experiences have led him to believe that his life and status as a Silver Blade would be negatively impacted if he came clean about his proclivities. He tends to play up his piety and membership of the Blades when he's trying to deflect the advances of women. It earns him some chiding from his friends, but it's proven rather necessary.
Appearance: Lean and athletic, Raol is not as bulky in build as some other members of his order. He has olive skin and dark eyes and hair, which he keeps tidy and neat. The only exception to this sophisticated look is that he does not really bother with shaving his face unless he has an official church function to be at.
History: Raol Garvo was born in a small coastal village in the western part of the continent, the child of an impoverished single mother. When Pharist missionaries came to town to spread the good word, his mother begged them to take her child, hoping he would have a better life with the church. The missionaries were reluctant, but eventually they agreed to take him in and brought him back to Emillion, where he was placed with kind foster parents, the Leverens, who were deeply connected to the church.
Though he was a handsome lad with a certain 'exotic' appeal that drew attention from girls, Raol had no real interest in romance and preferred to play games with his friends or spend time in church. Eventually he was sent to squire for Siors Rees, a stern and pious Holy Knight. He learned a great deal, but the man's cold severity -- especially in the eyes of a sensitive teenager -- led Raol to deeply reconsider his desire to be a knight.
Raol deeply admired men he felt were better than him, and as he got older he found himself constantly preoccupied with unseemly thoughts about his comrades in arms. This, coupled with his issues with his master, led him to start acting out. He drank, he smoke, he ignored his responsibilities to the church... this led to some legal trouble, which Siors had to bail him out of. Rees came down hard on Raol, telling him someone of his humble beginnings had only one chance to make something great of himself. He could wallow in sin, or he could become a knight as his mother wanted.
Moved by his master's passion and thoughts of his all-sacrificing mother, Raol rededicated himself to the church. He did a lot of praying and meditating to get over his sinful thoughts about other men, which he knew his hardline master and traditionalist parents would frown upon. At eighteen he became a Knight, and at 24 he was raised to Holy Knight. Three years later he joined the Order of the Silver Blades, and was assigned to the main field garrison. He has recently been promoted to the rank of Lance Corporal.
Weaknesses: - Though he's quick and fit, Raol is not quite as strong or durable as some of his comrades in the Silver Blades. He's a precision fighter, not a bruiser. - He can be somewhat closed-minded about new ideas, going with the church's standard opinions on the big issues. Non-Pharists may find him hard-headed. - At times the fact that he leads a double life can take a bit of a toll on him. Constantly having to be on guard about his sexuality can be draining and distracting. - Spellcasting relies on belief and confidence, the efficacy of his magick use is directly related to these. - His whole life is wrapped up in the church because he didn't have much of a familial relationship growing up.
Strengths: + As mentioned above, he's not as big or hardy as other members of the Blades, so his fighting style takes that into account. He uses a combination of quick strikes and long reach to give himself the advantage in battle. + Uses a combination of offensive and defensive magicks that he has studied extensively to bolster his fighting prowess. + Like the rest of his squad, he partakes in regular exercise and is in peak physical condition. + Raol believes wholeheartedly in the importance of a being a member of the Order of the Silver Blades. It permeates every aspect of his life, granting him a sense of confidence and purpose that drives the man and keeps him going in battle and in life.
Plot ideas: Examining how life moved on in his original home. Exploration of the church. Coming out to his Blades family.
Writing Samples: When he was a kid, Raol Leveren was raised to regularly go to services and get a regular Cleansing from the priest. It was one of the sacred rituals in the Pharist church, a private exchange between a man and St. Ajora, facilitated by members of the clergy.
At the time, he brushed it off, thinking it silly -- and awkward -- to tell all your secrets to a priest. He would make something lame up about how he punched his foster brother or disobeyed his teacher. It wasn't until later as he worked hard to become a knight, that he realized the importance of the ritual. Stern and harsh as he was, Siors Rees used to always work into Raol the idea that it was just as important to heal the body of toxins after battle, it was even more important to heal the soul. Rees was right, of course, as he always was.
Back when he was on the cusp of manhood, Raol pushed back against the rigidity of his martial and religious training. He snuck out past curfew, hung out with unsavory people, … sinned basically. It was fun for fleeting moments, but ultimately left him feeling empty. The first thing Rees did to get his squire back on the right track was sending him to a to talk. It was during this talk that Raol had his first true Cleansing. Unloading all the baggage that he'd accumulated since childhood helped recenter and refocus his life.
Closing the door to the Cleansing room, he took a seat. He turned his head to watch the small window to the adjoining room. A small smile tugged at his lips. "Hello, Father. It has been...too long since my last Cleansing."
